AirAsia Philippines plans to begin regional flights starting next month

MANILA, Philippines — AirAsia Bhd’s Philippine unit ’s (AirAsia Philippines) may start flights to Singapore, Hong Kong and Macau by the end of next month once it gets regulatory approval and will acquire its second Airbus A320 by November, its Chief Executive Officer Marianne Hontiveros told Bloomberg News.

AirAsia Philippines targets to bolster its fleet to seven planes by the end of 2012 and up to 16 jets in five years, Hontiveros said in an interview in Xiamen. It may use the second Airbus to start flights to Bangkok and Incheon, the CEO said. Hontiveros was part of Philippine President Benigno Aquino’s delegation in his five-day state visit to China.

AirAsia Philippines picks DMIA as hub

Low-cost carrier AirAsia Philippines has chosen the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) here as its hub.

The airline’s first aircraft, a brand new Airbus A320 commanded by Captain Johansen Hernandez, arrived at the DMIA from Toulouse, France, Monday carrying 29 people, including AirAsia Philippines chief executive officer Marianne Hontiveros, Philippine Ambassador to the Vatican Mercedes Tuason, several mediamen, and Filipino cabin crew.

AirAsia launches Philippine offshoot

Asian budget carrier AirAsia launched a new affiliate in the Philippines on Monday, promising to undercut its rivals on regional and domestic routes.

To minimise costs and avoid Manila’s crowded terminals, AirAsia Philippines will fly out of a former US airbase that has been turned into an industrial zone in Clark about 90 minutes’ drive north of the country’s capital.
